Our Year 11 students recently experienced an incredibly powerful and thought-provoking session delivered by Tom from Tom’s Talks — a visit that will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on many of our young people.

Tom’s Talks was founded with a clear and heartfelt mission: to make a difference by raising awareness of mental health and reminding people that it’s okay to not be okay. Delivering talks in schools, businesses and organisations, Tom uses his own lived experience to break down stigma, spark important conversations and encourage people to seek support when they need it most.

During the session, Tom spoke with remarkable honesty about the personal challenges he and his family have faced. He shared the devastating loss of his 22-year-old brother in 2015 following a long battle with substance abuse and depression, and the profound impact this had on him and his family. Tom also bravely reflected on his own struggles with depression and suicidal thoughts in the years that followed. His message was not only one of vulnerability, but of hope — demonstrating that even through the darkest periods, there can be light at the end of the tunnel.

The talk focused on key themes of motivation, resilience and the power of mindset — particularly relevant for our Year 11 students as they approach their final months at school and prepare for their next steps. Tom challenged students to think big, believe in their own potential and take ownership of their future. He encouraged them to reflect on how they respond to setbacks and to recognise that resilience is something that can be built and strengthened over time.

Importantly, the session also addressed the stigma that still surrounds mental health, especially male mental health, and explored the impact of social media on wellbeing. Tom offered practical advice on how students can look after their own mental health, spot the signs that someone might be struggling, and confidently support friends who may need help. His message was clear: talking saves lives, and no one should ever feel alone.

The atmosphere in the room spoke volumes. Students listened with complete respect and maturity, fully engaged from start to finish. There were moments of deep reflection, powerful silence, and genuine “lightbulb moments” as pupils connected with Tom’s story and the wider message. It was evident that the session resonated strongly, providing both reassurance and inspiration at a crucial stage in their lives.

As a school, we are committed to promoting positive mental health and creating an environment where students feel safe to speak up. Tom’s visit reinforced the importance of open conversations, empathy and community — values that sit at the heart of our school ethos.

We are incredibly grateful to Tom for his time, courage and authenticity in sharing such a personal story for the benefit of others. His words will stay with our Year 11 cohort as they move forward into their next chapter.

Well done, Year 11. You demonstrated maturity, ambition and outstanding engagement throughout. Your future truly does start now — and we have every confidence that you will step into it with resilience and belief.
