This week, Great Sankey High School has been recognising the importance of Safer Internet Day, with all pupils in Years 7–9 taking part in dedicated online safety lessons as part of their Computer Science curriculum.

This year’s theme focuses on the risks and benefits of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the importance of making safe, informed choices when using technology. With AI becoming an increasingly common part of everyday life, it is vital that young people understand both its potential and the responsibilities that come with using it.

During their lessons, pupils explored:

  • How AI works in simple terms
  • The benefits AI can bring to learning and daily life
  • The potential risks of AI apps and tools
  • How to protect themselves when using AI
  • What to do if they have concerns or encounter something worrying online

Students engaged in thoughtful discussions around responsible use and considered how to critically evaluate the information AI tools provide.

In addition, assemblies delivered by Mr Kerr reinforced this year’s theme, providing clear guidance on the do’s and don’ts of using AI for schoolwork. Pupils were reminded of the importance of academic integrity, ensuring that AI is used appropriately to support learning rather than replace their own thinking and effort.

At Great Sankey High School, we remain committed to equipping our pupils with the knowledge and skills they need to navigate the digital world safely, responsibly and confidently.
