This week in assemblies, pupils had the valuable opportunity to hear from Warrington Carers Hub, who delivered a series of thoughtful and informative sessions focused on young carers and the support available to them.

Warrington Carers Hub is part of n-compass, an organisation that provides health and wellbeing services across the North of England. Their role is to support carers for as long as they choose to care, while also helping to protect their health and wellbeing. They recognise that being a carer can be both incredibly rewarding and extremely challenging, particularly for young people.

During the assemblies, pupils learned that there are an estimated 800,000 young carers in the UK, with some as young as five years old. It is believed that around 1 in 5 young people has a caring role, yet approximately 600,000 young carers are not receiving support because they are not known to services. For many, caring is a significant commitment alongside school life, homework and friendships. Around a third of young carers provide between 11 and 20 hours of care each week, while 18% spend more than 20 hours caring.

The team from Warrington Carers Hub explained how they offer expert information, guidance and personalised support tailored to each individual. They take the time to listen, understand each young person’s situation and create a support plan, recognising that every carer’s journey is unique.

As a school, we wanted our pupils to know that support is out there and they are not alone. If any student feels they may be a young carer, or is struggling with responsibilities at home, help is available both externally and within school. Our School Counsellor, Mrs Rhodes, is always available to offer support, guidance and a listening ear.

We would like to thank Warrington Carers Hub for delivering such an important and caring message, helping to raise awareness and ensure our students know where to turn for help.
