Meet The Board

Great Sankey High School is led by a board of directors (governors), an Executive Headteacher and a senior leadership team. Each individual has been chosen on the basis of their experience and expertise, as well as their commitment to achieving the very best results for Great Sankey High School. Together, members of the board of directors develop policies and strategies for implementation by the Executive Headteacher and senior leadership team.

Tony Earps

Tony Earps

Chairman, Co-Opted Governor

Committee membership: Quality Assurance, Internal Audit,Finance & Resources and Remuneration (chair)

Responsibilities:  Is responsible for the leadership of the board, along with the Vice Chairs setting the agendas for the Full Governing Body and ensuring their effectiveness.

Appointment to the board: Joined the governing body in May 2008 originally as a Parent Governor and now a co-opted Governor. Appointed as non-executive director in January 2013 (when the school converted to an Academy) and  was Vice-Chair until December 2017. Appointed as Chair of Governors from January 2018.

Current directorships/business interests: Chair of Governors at Great Sankey High School.

Career experience: Presently Head of Operations for the UK’s largest independent Ombudsman Service with responsibility for over 250 staff. Prior to this role had a number of Senior Management roles within the Financial Services Sector.

Skills and experience: With over 30 years of business experience in the private sector and over 20 years in Senior Management positions Tony brings a wealth of operational and leadership skills to the Governing body with a keen focus on quality assurance.

Michael Platt

Vice Chair & Safeguarding, Co-opted Governor

 

Committee membership: Quality Assurance (Chair), Remuneration.

Responsibilities:  Michael holds the role of Safeguarding Governor and, on behalf of the board, takes a strategic lead in overseeing all aspects of safeguarding at the school.

Appointment to the board: Joined the governing body and appointed as a non-executive director in November 2013 and as Safeguarding Governor in July 2015.

Current directorships/business interests: Parent Governor at Great Sankey High School.

Career experience: Michael spent 30 years as a full-time secondary education teacher in Lancashire and a further 5 years as a supply teacher in various schools.

Skills and experience: Now retired, Michael can devote the necessary time required for his role as a governor, and can relate to both parents and teachers, having experience of both roles.  From his extensive experience working in education, Michael brings a good understanding of the way schools work to the board.

Jude Ankers

Vice Chair, Co-opted Governor

 

Committee membership: Internal Audit (chair), remuneration.

Responsibilities:  Is responsible for the effective leadership of the Internal Audit committee.  Setting the agenda, reviewing the outputs from any audits and ensuring that any actions are followed up.

Appointment to the board: Joined the governing body and appointed as a non-executive director in June 2013 and as Chair of the Internal Audit committee in February 2014.

Current directorships/business interests: Co-opted Governor at Great Sankey High School.

Career experience: Joined University of Liverpool as Head of Postgraduate Admissions in May 2007 responsible for a team of admissions officers processing applications for study at the University.  In 2012 after an Admissions realignment, was appointed as Head of International and EU Admissions managing a large team of staff dealing with all areas of admissions including enquiries and involvement in School visits.  Jude was appointed as Deputy Head of Admissions in 2013 and is now responsible for all operational matters within Admissions.

Skills and experience: With over 15 years experience working in Higher Education and specifically in Admissions Jude has worked closely with young people throughout her career.  As a previous student at Great Sankey High School, Jude has always taken a keen interest in the School and the local Community.  Part of Jude’s role is to work closely with the Home Office in particular during audits of the international visa process, at the University.  This has provided Jude with the knowledge and interest to chair the Audit Committee.

John Morris

Committee membership: Quality Assurance, Internal Audit.

Responsibilities:  Responsible for ensuring the robust review and challenge of the curriculum and school improvement information and ensuring the internal audit is carried out effectively.

Appointment to the board: Joined the governing body in 1997 and appointed as a non-executive director in January 2013 (when the school converted to an Academy).

Current directorships/business interests: Co-opted Governor at Great Sankey High School.

Career experience: John is an experienced solicitor now specialising in criminal law and therefore brings a wealth of legal expertise to the governing body.

Skills and experience: John is an Alderman of Warrington Borough Council and was in charge of finances at Warrington for a number of years.  He was the Councillor for Whittle Hall ward for eleven years.  He was also Chair of the Scrutiny Committee at Warrington Borough council which held the Executive of Warrington Borough Council along with the other Stakeholders to account.

David McClelland

Acting Vice Chair, Chair of Resources and Finance Committee, Co-opted Governor

Committee membership: Finance & Resources (Chair)

Responsibilities:  Responsible for ensuring the robust review and challenge of the financial information and ensuring the internal audit is carried out effectively.

Appointment to the board: Joined the governing body and appointed as a non-executive director in December 2015 and as Chair of Finance and Resources committee in February 2016

Current directorships/business interests: Co-opted Governor at Great Sankey High School. Also, Managing Director of Stella Gray Limited and Company Secretary of JBM Consultants Limited.

Career experience: David left Great Sankey High School, as a student, in 1993 embarking on a career of supporting businesses in a variety of roles.  Starting on an IT support trainee programme with the BBC and then later moving on to support a local government organisation which became privatised in 1995.  He has held a number of posts including System and Helpdesk support for a global cinemas chain, business support for a regional waste disposal company, before joining a family logistics business in 2000 (gaining an Institute of Directors Certificate in Company Direction).  In 2012, David carried out an acquisition of a logistics business, which in 2018 was acquired itself, and David is now employed by that organisation as a Business Support and Project Manager.

Skills and experience: With over 26 years of business experience gained in a variety of organisations within the corporate area from SME to global brands, David brings to the board a vast range of knowledge and practical experience in a variety of business areas including IT, Finance, HR and Business Administration.  He is a valued support to the school from which advice and knowledge can obtained; whilst still being an effective ‘critical friend’ of the school.

Andy Openshaw

Responsibilities:  Responsible for ensuring the robust review and challenge of the financial information and ensuring the internal audit is carried out effectively.

Appointment to the board: Joined the governing body and appointed as a non-executive director in November 2013.

Current directorships/business interests: Parent Governor at Great Sankey High School.

Career experience: Andy has worked in the software industry for the last 28 years across a number of discrete and very different environments.  He is currently working for an engineering consultancy company on a major airport expansion.

Skills and experience: With his three children passing through the school all in different years, Andy has observed and then helped steer the governing board from a parent/student point of view.  Keen to challenge decisions of the board, Andy ensures that the decisions are made in the best interests of the students, staff and parents of Great Sankey.

Stuart Ryder

Committee membership: Finance & resources.

 Appointment to the board: Was co-opted onto the board in May 2016 and appointed as a director in September of that year.

Current directorships: Co-opted Governor at Great Sankey High School.

Career experience: After leaving Great Sankey sixth form Stuart went on to gain a BA (Hons) in accounting from the University of Wales before embarking on a career as a practice accountant and becoming a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants. After 15 years, the majority of which were spent as a senior manager, at a medium sized practice in Cheshire, Stuart decided in 2012 that the time was right to set up his own practice to provide a more people-orientated approach to the provision of accountancy and taxation services.

Skills and experience: With over 20 years working in the accounting profession, Stuart has a broad knowledge and understanding of the financial aspects of operating an organisation as well as being able to appraise the financial reports presented.

Danielle Preston

Committee membership: Quality Assurance, Finance & Resources

Responsibilities: 

Appointment to the board: Joined the governing body in January 2018.

Current directorships/business interests: Co-opted Governor at Great Sankey High School

Career experience: After leaving Great Sankey High School and 6th Form, Danielle continued her studies and obtained a BA (hons) in Advertising Design from The University of Salford. Since graduating, Danielle has gained experience carrying out business development and account management roles in a number of multinational companies and is now Global Account Manager at Anixter – a leading global supply chain and distribution business.

Skills and experience: With a demonstrated history of working in account management for multi-faceted organisations, Danielle is skilled in negotiation and strategic relationship management with a focus on working to agreed budgets, business planning and implementation of improvement plans. She also holds experience in operations, project management and sales and marketing.

Paula Crawley

Headteacher, Staff Governor

 

Committee membership: Finance & Resources, Quality Assurance, Internal Audit.

Responsibilities:  Is responsible for the operational management of the academy and reports directly to the Executive Headteacher.  Helps advise the board on operational matters.

Appointment to the board: Appointed as Headteacher on 1st September 2013 and joined the board as Executive Director in 1st September 2013.

Current directorships/business interests: Headteacher and Director at Great Sankey High School. Governor at Twelve Apostles RC Primary School – from September 2007

Career experience: Paula has a wide range of experiences in several school contexts with twelve years’ experience at a Senior Leadership level.

Skills and experience: With 29 years teaching experience across 5 schools and 7 years’ experience as a Primary Governor, Paula has significant experience in education and has developed significant Leadership experience in: Teaching & Learning, Curriculum, Attendance , Behaviour. Standards & Data.

Cathryn Boyd

Staff Governor

 

Committee membership: Internal Audit.

Responsibilities:  Responsible for ensuring the internal audit is carried out effectively, reviewing the outputs from any audits and ensuring that any actions are followed up.

Appointment to the board: Joined the governing body in February 2010 and appointed as an executive director in January 2013 (when the school converted to an Academy).

Current directorships/business interests: Staff Governor at Great Sankey High School.

Career experience: Cathryn started working as a Teaching Assistant in 2000 at Walton St Mary CE Primary in Liverpool and moved to Warrington, and Great Sankey High School, in 2004.   Cathryn also gained Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) status in 2009.

Skills and experience: Having worked in both a primary and secondary school setting for a number of years, Cathryn has a wealth of experience in both of these areas to draw upon in her role as a Staff Governor at Great Sankey High School.

Clare Cunningham

Committee membership: Quality Assurance.

Responsibilities:  Clare holds the role of Pupil Premium Governor and, on behalf of the board, takes a strategic lead in overseeing how Pupil Premium funding is spent and the impact that it has.

Appointment to the board: Joined the governing body and appointed as an executive director in September 2014.

Current directorships/business interests: Staff Governor at Great Sankey High School.

Career experience: Clare has been a teacher at Great Sankey High School for 20 years and has a wealth of knowledge about the day to day running of the school.  She has been Head of the Social Science department for 18 years.

Skills and experience: From her experience working at GSHS, Clare brings a good understanding of the way the school works to the board and can effectively evaluate systems and policies from an operational level.
